About

Hi, my name is Rich (or Mr. D., as my students call me). My VistaThink blog is a way to reflect on what and how I teach, and to share my thinking with other educators.

I enjoy creating low-cost STEAM projects. They keep students engaged and challenged. Most of my STEAM experience comes from teaching MYP Design and using educational technology. VistaThink grew out of that work.

I have been working in education for about 32 years, and for over 20 years I have been a teacher! As an undergraduate, I studied engineering and upon graduation, joined the U.S. Peace Corps where my love for teaching took hold. I have been fortunate to teach elementary, middle, and high school in two U.S. states and in three South American countries.

I have an undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering and two master’s degrees–one with a bilingual focus and the other in instructional technology. In December 2023, I earned a specialist’s degree in instructional technology, media, and design.

I currently teach K-5 technology in a U.S. public school and am interested in origami, anime (thanks to my sons), graphic design, and ultrarunning. I also teach at the same school as my wife, which is fantastic!

All efforts were made to use free stock photos and free vector websites for media. Some images were created by me, usually with Adobe Photoshop and sometimes with Adobe Illustrator. Media of people were screened to eliminate any PII.
